An insight into the migration from the Gaeltacht and the story of the Diaspora

Supporting the Diaspora and Emigrants Centre

The general estimate on the cost of the building and the development of the Emigrants Remembrance Garden, including work on the general site, is approximately €700,000 (approximately $800,000 USD or £530,000 U.K. pounds).
We are making every effort to obtain some funding from the Government of Ireland for the project – the Department of the Gaeltacht (the Government Department for the Irish language speaking regions) is favorably disposed towards the project and that Department regards it as a very important landmark facility. However, at this time, no firm decision has been taken by the Department as regards grant aid.
We are continuing our fund raising efforts. Part of our effort entails placing plaques permanently in a prominent location in the Centre. People may wish to honour some emigrant relatives, or their ancestors who came to the US or to Britain…or elsewhere across the world… on these plaques. The details of those families will also be placed in a special book in the Centre Library.

Others may wish to help out in some other way and that would also be very much appreciated.

Sea-faring tradition

Colman Coyne in nearest boat and Mickey Coyne further out

They sailed away...

Thousands left on ships like this Cunard line and on vessels that were away below that standard over the centuries and the decades. We will remember them.
